Controversy in Tlaxcala Over Metro Remarks

Following the controversial statements made by businessman José Luis Salinas Gutiérrez in a video, where he claimed that being the director of the Metro in Mexico City was better than being the governor of Tlaxcala, the state of Tlaxcala has reacted with indignation, deeming these statements inappropriate and offensive. In an official statement, the Government of Tlaxcala demanded a public apology from the businessman.

The statement expressed rejection of Salinas's comments, highlighting that they reflect a reductionist and poorly informed perspective on the historical, cultural, and social significance of Tlaxcala. The Tlaxcalan government considers it crucial for the businessman to offer public apologies to the people of Tlaxcala and asks those who support his words to disassociate themselves from this unfortunate remark.

José Luis Salinas Gutiérrez, 49, is a businessman from Michoacán, known for being the founder of Grupo JLS, an investment conglomerate that includes brands like El Pollo Feliz, Tequila Don Ramón, and Siempre Gas. The businessman’s statements were made in a context where Adrián Rubalcava was going to be appointed director of the Collective Transport System Metro.

Although the video went viral recently, it is presumed to have been recorded in March, when Rubalcava's appointment was just a rumor. In the footage, Salinas can be heard praising Rubalcava and belittling the position of governor of Tlaxcala, which sparked significant controversy. The Tlaxcalan entity, which in 2025 will commemorate 500 years since the founding of its capital, emphasized the historical importance of the region and the dignity of its people.

In the recording, other Morena senators can be seen supporting and laughing at Salinas's comments, which heightened the indignation in Tlaxcala. Defending the heritage and pride of the Tlaxcalan land were recurring themes in the responses to the businessman’s unfortunate statements.
