Today it was reported about the 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Oaxaca. Despite this, the Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMEX) confirmed that the seismic alert was not activated in the mobile application, which generated controversy among users of the SASSLA and SkyAlert applications.
After the earthquake in Oaxaca, both applications explained the failures they experienced, which led many users not to receive the alert. SkyAlert sent a low-intensity notification with an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) of 38 seconds but indicated that the earthquake did not justify a seismic alert due to its intensity.
Despite this, SkyAlert asked subscribers not to cancel their premium service, as it would contribute to the future restoration of the system. On the other hand, SASSLA announced the temporary suspension of its services after more than three thousand days of operation, due to the increase in operational costs of its infrastructure.
Last Friday, around 21:19 hours, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded with an epicenter in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, which sparked debate about the effectiveness of seismic alerts in mobile applications.
