The General Coordination of Civil Protection of the State of Mexico has informed about the temporary closure of the Nevado de Toluca due to adverse weather conditions generated by cold front number 28. This measure responds to the forecast of intense rains and low temperatures that will affect the Toluca Valley.
The Area of Flora and Fauna Protection Nevado de Toluca has communicated that, due to the combination of rains, strong winds, and extremely low temperatures, the gates of Xinantécatl will be kept closed in order to protect visitors. Low visibility caused by dense fog and ground conditions prevent ensuring the safety of those attempting to access the area.
There has been an alert regarding the risk of hypothermia, the possible crystallization of dirt roads and trails, as well as a high probability of accidents due to slips in the area. The forecast indicates the continuation of light to moderate rains with isolated storms and decreasing temperatures, especially in the central and eastern areas of the state, where minimums between 4 and 7 degrees are expected.
This closure is the third of the winter season, following two previous occasions, on December 23, 2024, and January 12, 2025, when visits to the Nevado de Toluca were canceled due to climatic reasons. Authorities recommend paying attention to instructions provided through official channels to prevent eventualities.
