Veterinarian Héctor Hernández Killed Amidst Controversy

On Sunday, February 9, the veterinary community received with dismay the news of the death of Héctor Hernández Cañas, who lost his life due to stab wounds. Hernández Cañas, a veterinarian with nearly 17 years of experience in the profession, was attacked with a knife to the face and back. His colleagues from the Mexican Association of Veterinary Hospitals (AMHVET) and from Veterinarians and Zootecnic Veterinarians of Mexico demanded justice and asked the authorities of the State of Mexico to punish those responsible for his murder.

As an organized guild, they expressed their solidarity with the family and friends of the deceased and demanded a prompt investigation to clarify the facts and ensure that justice is served. At the same time, on social media, colleagues of the victim pointed to a couple, identified as Sandra Jaime Castro and her family, as presumed responsible for the attack that led to the death of Héctor Hernández Cañas.

Hernández Cañas had previously reported on social media that he had been a victim of threats and extortion by this couple. The veterinarian had surgically intervened on a dog named Mía to remove a bone that was causing an esophageal obstruction. Despite his efforts and care, the pet died due to complications arising from the delayed intervention.

The Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico has initiated an investigation to identify and capture those responsible for the crime. So far, there are no official reports on the whereabouts of the alleged attackers, but the veterinary community maintains the demand for justice in memory of Héctor Hernández Cañas.
