"With profound pain and sadness, we confirm the sensitive passing of our beloved ‘Paquita la del Barrio’ in her home in Veracruz, being a unique and irreplaceable artist, who left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her and enjoyed her music," the statement read.
The artist's family asked for respect during this difficult time and requested that the media and the public provide space and understanding so they can grieve in privacy and peace.
"We thank you in advance for your understanding and respect during this very difficult time. Rest in peace, your music and your legacy will always live on in our hearts," they concluded in the statement.
Francisca Viveros Barrada, better known as Paquita la del Barrio, was born in Veracruz on April 2, 1947, showing a great interest in music from a young age, which led her to participate in school festivals at an early age. Due to a lack of economic resources, she was forced to work at a young age, completing her primary education at 16.
Paquita la del Barrio's songs and lyrics faithfully reflect her life experiences and the violence she suffered from men, making her an icon of regional Mexican music.
