
As part of FITUR 2025, a panel titled 'The New Era of the Mexican Tourism Sector' was held, organized by BBVA under the slogan 'Connecting Opportunities in the Tourism Sector.' During the event, Governor Mara Lezama highlighted the leadership of the Mexican Caribbean as a leading tourist destination, emphasizing its economic diversification and global projection, positively impacting the prosperity of local households.
Participants included Peio Belausteguigoitia and Eduardo Osuna, Country Managers of BBVA in Spain and Mexico respectively, as well as Jorge Sicilia, Chief Economist of the BBVA Group and Director of BBVA Research. Notable representatives present included Josefina Rodríguez, Secretary of Tourism of Mexico; Altagracia Gómez, President of the Regional Economic Development and Relocation Council; and Quirino Ordaz, Ambassador of Mexico to Spain.
During his intervention, Eduardo Osuna presented Quintana Roo as an attractive destination for private investments aligned with sustainability and social responsibility principles. Governor Mara Lezama highlighted the success of Quintana Roo in the tourism sector, achieving record figures with 32 million passengers at the state's airports and receiving 21 million tourists at Mexican Caribbean tourist destinations.
The governor emphasized the importance of the region's hotel supply, which boasts 135,000 rooms and continues to grow thanks to investments from entrepreneurs committed to the area's development. Additionally, Mara Lezama shared the implementation of a new model of sustainable tourism development in the state, promoting shared prosperity and the well-being of the local community.
For her part, Josefina Rodríguez from SECTUR mentioned the goals for 2025, including a 200% increase in the number of foreign passengers with the consolidation of the Maya Train. Mara Lezama highlighted that Quintana Roo would be the 16th most visited destination in the world if it were an independent country, underscoring the success of the Tulum International Airport with over one million passengers in its first year of operations.
