Mexico at Fitur: Doubts and Criticisms in Tourism

A new edition of Fitur begins in Madrid, the world's most important tourism fair, where more than 150 countries participate and about 250,000 professionals from the sector and visitors are expected. This event is key to promoting and generating beneficial agreements for countries and tourism companies.

Mexico, on its part, faces criticism for its tourism management. At the fair, topics such as ecocide, costs, derailments, or questionable businesses were not addressed. The situation of the state airline Mexicana del Bienestar was also not mentioned. Authentic tourism promotion and planning seem absent from the country's strategy.

In this context, the nomination of Gloria Guevara as president of the UNWTO stands out as good news. However, Mexico is embroiled in controversies and challenges, such as the tax on cruise passengers, the closure of NAICM, and the remodeling of AICM with public funds.

Mexico's presence at Fitur generates uncertainty, with doubts about whether state representatives will return with concrete commitments or just with unnecessary expenses. The lack of clarity in issues such as the regulation of tourism platforms, security in destinations, and airport infrastructure raises concerns in the industry.

Despite being the guest country, Mexico does not convince with its tourism strategy at Fitur. Problems of corruption, fraud, and lack of transparency in tourism management project an unfavorable image. In this context, it remains to be seen whether the country will manage to convey confidence in its tourism potential during the fair.
