In Nuevo León, the possibility of paying for public transportation with plastic bottles is proposed, provided that the government enters into agreements with recycling companies. PAN deputy Claudia Caballero has requested the Ministry of Mobility and Urban Planning, as well as the Mobility Institute, to establish the operating rules to implement this system.
The Sustainable and Accessible Mobility Law for the State of Nuevo León authorizes the Ministry to establish substitution programs for paying for public transportation through mechanisms for recycling plastic bottles. The idea is for users to receive some type of voucher, card, or ticket in exchange for recyclable bottles.
Legislator Caballero mentioned that this payment option with plastic bottles has been contemplated in the law since November 2021, but it has not yet been implemented due to a lack of mechanisms. The mobility crisis in Nuevo León is reflected in the shortage and poor quality of buses, as well as the long waiting times at public transportation stops.
The increase in public transportation fares, both for buses and the Metro, would affect the economy of families who depend on these services for transportation. This has generated dissatisfaction among users, who have expressed their discontent through marches and blockades in various areas of the metropolitan area.
