Mexicana de Aviación Expands Routes for 2025

Mexicana de Aviación, which recently presented its Master Plan 2025, announced that starting in January of that year it will begin operating flights to Monterrey. During the first half of 2025, the state-owned company will offer services to Zihuatanejo, Ixtepec, Palenque, and Ciudad Victoria with a leased aircraft from a new lessor, following the cancellation of the agreement with the TAR airline.

The director of Mexicana de Aviación, Leobardo Ávila Bojórquez, stated that the airline will receive five planes from the Brazilian company Embraer in 2025, despite having acquired planes for 100 passengers while only transporting 53. In a statement, Ávila Bojórquez mentioned that the company faces challenges but seeks to turn them into opportunities within a highly competitive market.

Earlier this year, Mexicana de Aviación surprised by announcing the suspension of eight routes that were served by TAR aircraft. The affected destinations included Acapulco, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and others. Although the reasons for the cancellation were not explained at that time, the mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, mentioned that routes with the highest passenger demand were being evaluated.

Leobardo Ávila Bojórquez explained that the decision to cancel routes is a common practice in the airline industry and that as part of its strategy, Mexicana de Aviación will make decisions to optimize its profitability. According to the Master Plan 2025, the airline plans to expand its destinations over the year, reaching a total of 14.

The executive detailed that during January 2025, Mexicana de Aviación will operate flights to destinations such as Tulum, Tijuana, Mérida, San José del Cabo, Mazatlán, and Chetumal with its two Boeing 737 planes. It is expected that starting in July, the airline will incorporate Embraer aircraft into its fleet to cover routes to destinations such as Guadalajara, Monterrey, Zihuatanejo, Ixtepec, Palenque, among others, completing the transition in December 2025.
