During the first half of January, the inflation of regular magna gasoline in Mexico reached 7.8 percent annually, marking the largest increase for the start of a year since 2022, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). This increase represents six consecutive fortnights of rises for the most used gasoline in the country. The national average price of magna gasoline started at 24 pesos per liter and rose to 24.30 pesos per liter at the beginning of January, according to data from the consulting firm PETROIntelligence.
The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), with the aim of containing further increases in the price of regular gasoline, has begun granting tax incentives. Despite not having granted tax incentives for the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) for regular gasoline at the end of 2024, in January a 3.57 percent incentive was granted during the first week and a 14.4 percent for the following week. This allowed users to benefit from support of 0.9298 pesos per liter between January 11 and 17, 2025.
Regarding premium gasoline, an inflation rate of 4.1 percent annually was recorded at the beginning of 2025, being its highest level since the first half of March 2023. The national average price per liter of premium gasoline increased from 25.3 pesos at the beginning of the year to around 25.6 pesos currently. Both regular and premium gasoline showed price increases above the general inflation rate of the country, which was 3.7 percent.
In relation to diesel, inflation was 1.6 percent annually, maintaining similar figures to those recorded at the end of 2024. In light of this situation, the Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco) has begun marking gas stations that, in its opinion, exceed the national average prices with signs and banners indicating "Don't fill up here, they are way over the top with prices."
