Controversy over Canal Once's Budget

The news director of Canal Once faced criticism after audience data showed her program far from Televisa's ratings. The budget of 616 million for 2025 is under discussion.

Controversy over Canal Once's Budget

The National Survey on Audiovisual Content Consumption revealed that Canal Once and other public television channels do not appear in the section measuring news consumption because respondents did not mention them in their answers. This omission aligns with the low ratings published by HR Media. As a result of this situation, there is a need to evaluate whether the 616 million pesos approved for Canal Once for 2025 are being used optimally, considering whether spending is justified with false data, as suggested by the channel's news director.

The measurement conducted by HR Media was commissioned by the Alliance for the Quality of Multimedia Measurement in Mexico (ACAM), which encompasses the main private broadcasters, media agencies, and advertisers. This measurement will be published periodically to inform media, advertisers, agencies, and viewers about which contents are most viewed in Mexico. It is evident that Cantú sought to increase Canal Once's budget by inflating the data regarding the audience of the channel's newscasts, which has generated criticism from various sectors.

The National Survey on Audiovisual Content Consumption 2024 by the Federal Telecommunications Institute suggests that, in terms of news, Mexicans prefer Las Estrellas from TelevisaUnivision in first place, followed by Azteca Uno from TV Azteca and NMas Foro TV from TelevisaUnivision. On the other hand, Canal Once has generated controversy by comparing its audience levels with Televisa's newscasts, which has been refuted by the HR Media measurement showing a significant gap in the number of viewers between both channels.

Canal Once's news director, Luisa Cantú, found herself in a bind when her statement about the audience of the channel's newscasts was contradicted by the figures reported by HR Media. The most-watched newscast on Canal Once, Punto de Referencia, had an average daily audience of 464,000 viewers, far below the 4 million who tuned in to Las Estrellas' newscast. The discrepancy in the numbers demonstrates the lack of veracity in Cantú's claims and the challenge Canal Once faces in gaining audience share against more popular channels in Mexico.
