Claudia Sheinbaum, president of Mexico, faces pressure to clarify her stance against narcotics allegations amidst changing US-Mexico trade relations and the challenges posed by President Trump's policies.

Sheinbaum Must Dispel Narcotics Allegations

The former Secretary of Economy Ildefonso Guajardo expressed his opinion on various topics in an interview. Firstly, he pointed out that trade relations between Mexico and China often end badly and stated that President Claudia Sheinbaum should distance herself from any link with organized crime and clean up her party, Morena.

Guajardo warned about U.S. President Donald Trump's proposals to combat fentanyl trafficking, indicating that his approach to bombing laboratories could worsen security problems in Mexico. Additionally, he ruled out the installation of a Tesla plant in Mexico and suggested that the government could impose special tariffs on Elon Musk's company due to anti-Mexican stances.

On the other hand, Guajardo commented on Trump's decision to temporarily suspend tariffs on Mexican products exported to the U.S. and warned that uncertainty in bilateral trade will continue. Despite this, he mentioned that Trump has shown interest in maintaining the USMCA, although the renegotiation scheduled for 2026 could be advanced.

The former PRI official emphasized that Mexico should not consider an alliance with China as an option in relation to the U.S., due to the economic integration with the latter. He also criticized Chinese investments in Mexico, describing them as extractivist and not beneficial in the long term for society.
