The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, held a phone call with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, aiming to halt the tariffs imposed by this country on Mexico. The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, described the conversation as impressive and effective, highlighting Sheinbaum's persuasion of Trump to reconsider the measure.
In an interview, Ebrard emphasized the importance of Sheinbaum's strategy in the negotiation, mentioning that this call laid the groundwork for a future relationship between the two countries. He noted that the Mexican president managed to convince Trump of the proposal to pause the tariffs, which resulted in a significant diplomatic achievement.
Ebrard also mentioned that, while Mexico had to concede by sending soldiers to the border with the United States, this action would pave the way for negotiating the USMCA with Trump's government. He announced an increase in the presence of the National Guard to combat fentanyl, showing willingness to comply with the agreements and establish a relationship of respect with the United States.
On the other hand, it was highlighted that Canada benefited from the Mexican proposal, despite the initial doubts expressed by this country. Ebrard also revealed that Trump has ordered the acceleration of USMCA negotiations, which he considers a good sign to dispel uncertainty in the market. However, he warned that an evaluation from Mexico regarding a treaty for the United States is expected before mid-year.
