Claudia Sheinbaum Seeks National Agreement with Gas Stations

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced at the Morning Press Conference that she will seek a voluntary national agreement with gas stations in Mexico to set fuel prices. During her intervention last Tuesday from the National Palace, Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized the importance of establishing a maximum consensual price to prevent abuse.

"Let us reach an agreement with all gas station owners on the maximum price of gasoline; it is not about setting a price, but rather having a voluntary agreement. It cannot be that a gas station owner charges 6 pesos for each liter when the maximum they could charge is 2 pesos, and that's already a lot," the president pointed out.

Sheinbaum Pardo explained that the intention is to bring gas station owners together and seek an agreement for the benefit of the people and the national economy. She stressed the need to address the issue voluntarily before resorting to more restrictive regulations. The idea is to reach a consensus that benefits all parties involved.

The president also mentioned that when the international price of fuel rises, the Government of Mexico applies a subsidy to the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) to offset such an increase. However, she clarified that this subsidy should not be used to finance the prices set by gas stations.
