Grupo Deacero has been recognized by the company DNV as a successful case in decarbonization. The strategy implemented by Grupo Deacero includes measures such as measuring environmental impact, increasing the use of renewable energy, maximizing the use of materials, and technological conversion in processes. Thanks to these actions, the company has become the largest recycler in Mexico, with around 4 million tons collected annually.
María Laura Gutiérrez Sauceda, Deputy Director of Sustainability at Grupo Deacero, explained that a fundamental part of this strategy is the integration of environmental criteria in the supply chain and the transparency of information through the Sustainability Report that is published annually. She pointed out that the type of route used to produce steel has a significantly different impact on the environment.
In this regard, producing steel from recycled material and melted in an electric arc furnace involves 80% less carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional production by blast furnace, which remains common worldwide. Grupo Deacero's goal is to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions from steel and rolling by 56% by 2030, using the year 2019 as a reference.
The director emphasized that each working center has made efforts to measure and reduce emissions, while globally, Grupo Deacero has designed comprehensive strategies to seek effective alternatives and align with sustainability goals worldwide.
