Mexico's Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, held a high-level meeting with trade representatives from the United States at the White House. In this meeting, the trade relationship between the two countries was discussed along with issues of economic integration.
During the meeting, Ebrard mentioned that a relationship between Mexico and the United States is being built, highlighting points where both countries can agree. Concerns were raised regarding the tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration, and the intention to reduce U.S. dependence on Asia was discussed.
In the context of the trade tensions between Mexico and the United States, caused by the tariffs imposed by Trump in response to illegal drug trafficking and migration at the border, a pause in the imposition of tariffs was agreed upon in exchange for sending 10,000 elements of the Mexican National Guard to the border.
Trump recently praised Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, describing her as a "wonderful woman" and announced a $100 million investment for a fentanyl campaign inspired by the Mexican strategy. He also announced the reopening of the economics office in the United States.
Marcelo Ebrard emphasized that following the pause on tariffs, a bilateral dialogue is now taking place with the United States to find common ground on trade issues. Collaborative efforts between Mexico and the United States in this area are expected to begin next week. During the meeting, arguments were presented in favor of economic integration between the two countries.
