Mexico has seized 26.5 tons of cocaine in maritime operations during the government of the current president, Claudia Sheinbaum, which began on October 1, 2024, according to the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) reported on February 20.
Semar announced that the seized drugs are valued at 25 million dollars and that it recently confiscated nearly two tons of suspected cocaine off the coast of Chiapas, in the Mexican Pacific.
In an operation carried out by the Mexican Navy in Coast Guard duties, a vessel was secured with 55 bundles containing white powder similar to cocaine, weighing approximately two tons, in the vicinity of Barra Tonalá, Chiapas. This action was based on intelligence information that allowed the detection and follow-up of two suspicious small vessels.
The head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, reported that three foreign individuals were detained aboard two vessels, and more than 1,900 kilograms of cocaine were secured. Since the beginning of Sheinbaum's administration, 26,508 kilograms of this drug have been seized at sea.
As part of maritime operations, Semar has seized 26.5 tons of suspected cocaine, 34 vessels and a semi-submersible device, as well as engines, fuel, and has placed nearly 150 individuals at the disposal of the authorities. Everything seized was transferred to land on a ship from the Mexican Navy and made available to the relevant ministerial authorities to initiate the corresponding investigations.
According to Semar, the possible economic impact of this seizure amounts to approximately 25 million dollars, which implies a weakening of the financial structure of the criminal groups involved.
