Trump Delays Tariffs on Mexico and Canada

On February 3, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced a one-month delay of additional tariffs on products from Mexico and Canada to allow more time for negotiations. On the other hand, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded reiterating that her country demands respect and sovereignty.

At an official event for Flag Day, Sheinbaum declared her stance on the recent threat of tariffs, stating that Mexico is a free and independent country that will not allow foreign interference. Additionally, she referred to a constitutional reform initiative to protect the sovereignty of the country, in a context that includes the controversial decision by the United States to designate Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations.

The Mexican president emphasized that the national flag symbolizes the independence and the struggle for justice of the Mexican people, as well as a reminder of the historic transformations of the country. Moreover, she reaffirmed support for migrants and stated that Mexico will not accept foreign interventions that violate its integrity and sovereignty.

In another context, Trump stated at a press conference at the White House that tariffs against Mexico and Canada will move forward. The U.S. president defended the imposition of tariffs as a measure of reciprocity against countries that, in his opinion, have treated the United States unfairly.
