Impact of Trump's Tariffs on Mexico's Economy

Recent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, affecting trade between the US, Mexico, and Canada, could significantly impact various industries. Business leaders express concern over rising consumer costs and potential financial strain in Mexico's economy as they analyze the situation.

Impact of Trump's Tariffs on Mexico's Economy

A month ago, President Donald Trump fulfilled his threat and approved tariffs of 25 percent on Mexico and Canada. The first to criticize this measure were the Americans themselves. Businessmen in the United States, through a letter, reproached Trump for the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, pointing out that they would suffer the consequences.

During the first "EF Meet Point Virtual Forum Perspectives on the Economy for 2025", led by the editorial director of El Financiero, Enrique Quintana, an analysis was conducted on which industries could be most affected by Trump's tariffs on Mexico. Quintana mentioned that the automotive, chemical, or pharmaceutical industries would not be the most harmed.

Although Mexico and Canada agreed to postpone the tariffs, there is still uncertainty about the industries that could be affected by the measure. The threat of tariffs on Mexico and Canada is part of a series of new taxes that the President of the United States plans to impose, including taxes on the import of cars, copper, reciprocal tariffs, aluminum, and steel.

Journalist Sofía Macías, in her blog 'Pequeño Cerdo Capitalista', shared measures to protect against the impact of possible tariffs on Mexico from Donald Trump. Some of the suggestions include buying smartly, supporting local consumption, being cautious with credits, increasing the emergency fund, and thinking carefully about purchases.

On the other hand, Quintana pointed out that the agricultural sector could be the most affected, especially the products exported by Mexico to the United States. He also mentioned that the most important industry by volume is the automotive one, so automotive companies and the entire ecosystem surrounding them could suffer severe consequences due to Trump's tariffs.
