The Executive President of the National Association of Bus, Truck, and Tractor-Trailer Producers (ANPACT), Rogelio Arzate, has expressed his concern over the imposition of a 25 percent tariff by the United States government. Arzate represents the automotive industry of freight and passenger vehicles in Mexico and has emphasized the importance of strengthening dialogue between nations to avoid unilateral decisions that could harm industries and consumers on both sides of the border.

Arzate recalled that the value chain of the heavy-duty automotive industry between Mexico and the United States has been built over decades, and the imposition of tariffs would affect manufacturers, the productive sector, and consumers in both countries. Therefore, he has urged to intensify constructive dialogue to prevent hasty measures, as proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The president of ANPACT highlighted that the heavy-duty automotive industry is fully integrated and complementary, as vehicle components cross the border between Mexico and the United States multiple times during their manufacturing process. Arzate warned that tariffs would generate additional economic impacts and complications in trade processes that would affect the operational efficiency of the industry.

Arzate pointed out that the northern region of the continent has enjoyed stability, competitiveness, and investment thanks to the cooperation that has existed so far between Mexico and the United States, which has driven economic growth, employment, and regional development, benefiting the supply chain in both countries.

The Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is a key piece for strengthening the competitiveness of the region, according to Arzate, who believes that actions led by Mexican authorities will allow for the immediate resumption of constructive dialogue to find joint solutions that maintain the stability of the automotive sector. ANPACT will continue to work with authorities and counterparts for the benefit of the industry on both sides of the border.
