The Senate of the Republic of Mexico rejected the imposition of a 25% tariff on Mexican exports to the United States. The measure was condemned by the opposition, warning that it could trigger a harmful trade war for both nations. Ricardo Anaya Cortés, senator, expressed his concern about the devastating consequences that these tariffs could have on the economy.
The pronouncement, supported by 75 votes in favor from Morena and its allies, with 14 against from the PRI and abstentions from the PAN and MC, rejected any foreign interference under the guise of unilateral economic sanctions. During the discussion, Anaya criticized the current government, comparing its situation to what the opposition faced in the past.
Anaya highlighted the similarity between the government’s position towards Trump and the confrontation that the opposition experienced with former president López Obrador. He also mentioned Morena's reluctance to accept contrary discourses. On Twitter, Anaya proposed finding a "middle ground" to resolve the conflict, emphasizing the need for substantial arguments instead of repetitive rhetoric.
