In the midst of the tariff war between Mexico, Canada, and the United States, the legislators of the Senate of the Republic made adjustments to their salaries to bring them nearly in line with that of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. The Official Journal of the Federation published the salary manual for senators detailing this increase. Now, senators have a monthly salary of 131,700 pesos, 2,590 pesos less than the president.
The salary adjustment is made annually, although the reasons for it are not detailed. According to the manual, these adjustments are made in accordance with current regulations. The salary principles in the Senate establish that it must be adequate, non-waivable, proportional to responsibilities, with equal labor and non-discrimination, and determined for each fiscal year.
In 2024, the monthly salary of senators had increased to 126,800 pesos, 5% more than in 2023. In addition to the salary, the manual details the benefits received by the legislators. These include cash or voucher groceries, support for vehicle use, a vacation bonus of 15 days of base salary, a five-year bonus, a Christmas bonus of 40 days of base salary, guaranteed compensation, death benefits, and vacation.
