Steel production in Mexico stands out not only for being one of the most important globally but also for its focus on sustainability. According to data from the National Steel Chamber, the country produces more than 19 million tons of steel, ranking 14th globally. Humberto Marcos Corella, a construction expert, pointed out that steel production in Mexico is highly sustainable, with an emphasis on the reuse of byproducts and the adoption of environmentally friendly production methods.
For example, 41% of the steel produced in Mexico comes from used steel, almost double the global average. In addition, the use of Electric Arc Furnace based on scrap, present in 38% of national production, is considered the least emission-intensive method. These sustainable practices significantly contribute to both the economy and environmental care.
Humberto Marcos Corella highlighted that, although steel itself is a 100% recyclable material, processes are implemented in Mexico that further enhance its positive impact. Data from Canacero indicates that 38% of the water used in the cooling process is recycled, with only 0.08% allocated to the sector. This shows a firm commitment to sustainability and environmental care.
In a context of uncertainty due to the potential imposition of tariffs by the United States, Humberto Marcos Corella emphasizes the strategic importance of the steel industry for Mexico. Despite the current challenges, he believes that the quality, competitiveness, and sustainability of national production will allow the sector to remain strong and resilient.
In terms of energy, it is noted that the consumption per ton of steel produced in Mexico is 19%, below the global average. Moreover, the country has 32 industrial wastewater treatment plants to ensure responsible use of water resources. The commitment to the circular economy and sustainable development is reflected in the annual recycling of more than 7 million tons of steel scrap, which contributes to the reduction of the consumption of other resources such as iron, coal, and limestone.
Despite the uncertainty and challenges faced by the steel sector globally, the focus on quality, sustainability, and energy efficiency allows the Mexican industry to remain a global leader in steel production. Humberto Marcos Corella underscores the importance of continuing to strengthen these pillars to ensure the continuity and growth of a vital sector for the economy and development of the country.
