Tax Refunds: What You Need to Know

The SAT provides details on how to request refunds for favorable balances for the 2024 tax year and the necessary requirements. Learn how to get your money back.

Tax Refunds: What You Need to Know

The Tax Administration Service (SAT) has established specific cases in which the automatic refund of the credit balance applies after filing the annual tax return for the 2024 fiscal year. This refund is carried out directly if you meet certain established requirements and amounts. If you accessed the SAT portal and your credit balance is less than 10,000 pesos, between 10,000 and 150,000 pesos with preloaded CLABE account, or if you used your e.signature, you can obtain the refund automatically as long as you are not listed among the non-compliant taxpayers.

If you do not receive the automatic refund and meet the requirements, you can follow certain steps to request it. You must log in to the new SAT portal, select the section corresponding to refunds and compensations, and request the refund according to your tax condition. The process involves following the instructions provided by the SAT and gathering the necessary documents such as e.signature, RFC, and portal password. It is also possible to carry out this procedure directly at the SAT offices, by appointment.

The time it may take to refund the credit balance is up to 40 business days. It is essential to have all taxpayer data updated and not exceed certain established amounts to receive this benefit. In case of having a credit balance, it comes from personal deductions made during the tax return, which include medical expenses, funeral expenses, donations, tuition fees, among others.

The tax refund is the opportunity to recover money that was paid improperly or the credit balance derived from the tax return. This balance is generated from personal deductions made before the SAT, helping to reduce the tax burden. To do this, it is necessary to invoice the services purchased during the corresponding fiscal year.

Regarding the deadlines for filing the annual return, legal entities have a deadline of April 1, while individuals can submit it until April 30. It is also important to consider that, in specific cases such as credit balances exceeding 150,000 pesos, income from co-owned property, suspensions in RFC, or undisclosed tax addresses, the automatic refund could be delayed or require additional procedures for obtaining it.
