New Budget Plans Proposed by Edgar Amador

Edgar Amador, the new head of Treasury and Public Credit, has the primary goal of designing a budget package for the year 2026 that generates confidence in financial markets and continues with the adjustments that were being made in emblematic projects for the current administration.

To reduce the deficit from 5.9% to 3.9% by the end of this year, set by Rogelio Ramírez de la O, in a context of economic weakness and high volatility due to Donald Trump's trade policy, the Treasury has decided to stop funding some key projects inherited from the previous administration. One of these projects is LitioMex, the government's initiative to develop lithium production in Mexico.

Moreover, it has been determined that the airline created in 2023 will not receive further funds for its growth, following a cut that has reduced 8 of its 17 routes. On the other hand, railway projects promoted by Sheinbaum, such as the construction of more than 3,000 kilometers of railway tracks, remain on the agenda, although adjustments are projected that would affect others, such as the remaining sections of the Mayan Train and various train connections.

Regarding social programs, there is a proposal to merge Sembrando Vida and Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro to avoid duplicities and make adjustments to fiscal incentives granted to businesses for an amount of up to 30 billion pesos. The goal is to create a fiscal cushion in a year of uncertainty in the markets, where previously established budgetary targets face considerable doubts.

On the other hand, the financial and operational situation of the oil company has required the government's attention, which has committed to rescuing it despite the evident difficulties, including significant financial debt and pending obligations with suppliers.

Additionally, Sheinbaum has confirmed Edgar Amador as the new head of the Treasury, while Ramírez de la O will now act as an international advisor. Projects like Mexicana, which have faced logistical, technological, and resource challenges since their inception, will not receive further funding, as they are not considered a priority in the new government agenda focused on CFE and Pemex.
