Claudia Sheinbaum Reshuffles Economic Cabinet

Financial markets did not experience shocks from the first cabinet change of Claudia Sheinbaum, with the departure of Rogelio Ramírez de la O from the Ministry of Finance and the appointment of Edgar Amador in his place. The anticipated departure of Ramírez and Amador's profile were determining factors in this transition that strengthens Sheinbaum's economic team.

On the day after her electoral victory, Sheinbaum confirmed Ramírez in Finance as a transitional move. Rogelio took office in July 2021, replacing Arturo Herrera, whose management was questioned due to the electoral results of 2021. Although Ramírez intended to leave Finance at the end of López Obrador’s term, Sheinbaum asked him to continue for a few more months.

Ramírez's departure did not surprise many, as there had already been discussions in circles close to Sheinbaum about the possibility of his exit. The former secretary decided to continue as Sheinbaum's international advisor to avoid controversies. Meanwhile, Edgar Amador, a graduate of UNAM, took on the role of Secretary of Finance, receiving a positive reception in financial and investor circles.

Amador has had a career in public administration since the time of Carlos Urzúa as Secretary of Finance for Mexico City, continuing through the management of Miguel Mancera. His experience includes a prominent role in the administration of Arturo Herrera and recently as an advisor to the governor of the Bank of Mexico. Amador's appointment as Secretary of Finance occurred favorably, ensuring continuity in the implementation of the economic program.

Edgar Amador will be responsible for sending the Pre-Criteria of Economic Policy for 2026 to Congress before April 1, in accordance with the Budget and Fiscal Responsibility Law. Through this document, Sheinbaum's and the new Secretary of Finance's vision regarding the Mexican economy will be detailed.
