Sheinbaum Optimistic on Tariff Discussions with Trump

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her optimism regarding the announcements of reciprocal tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum argued that the regulations of the USMCA, the trade agreement between Mexico, the United States, and Canada, prevent the implementation of such taxes. This achievement is considered a key condition for Trump to refrain from applying tariffs on Mexican and Canadian products under the North American trade agreement, an action that has been suspended until the next April 2.

The president reiterated that this progress is the result of "dialogue and cooperation" between Mexico and the United States, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the economic relationship between both countries while respecting their sovereignties, rather than generating confrontations. "We do not compete; we complement each other, and thus, we strengthen our economies and the well-being of our peoples," Sheinbaum defended, asserting that these joint efforts benefit both countries and their citizens.

During an event in Mexico City, and cited by the news portal Animal Politico, Sheinbaum highlighted that, thanks to the trade agreements in effect for the past 30 years, Mexico is excluded from these tariff measures. She also noted that between January and February 2025, fentanyl trafficking was significantly reduced, by more than 30%, as a result of the seizures carried out by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection along with the Armed Forces.
