Gasoline Prices Struggle to Meet Government Cap in Mexico

Despite the Mexican government's cap on regular gasoline prices at 24 pesos per liter, several states are still charging more. Learn about the discrepancies and price trends.

Gasoline Prices Struggle to Meet Government Cap in Mexico

The Government of Mexico set a cap on the price of regular gasoline at 24 pesos per liter; however, in at least 15 states, the measure has not been effectively implemented, with prices reaching nearly 24.90 pesos. Although a general downward trend is observed, some states have not managed to reduce costs, partly due to differences in the application of the measure in the northern and southeastern border regions of the country.

According to GasGas Analytics, the national average price of regular gasoline was at 24.30 pesos per liter, but at the beginning of the government agreement, the cost was reduced to 24 pesos and has recently reached 23.84 pesos. As the measure is implemented across the territory, the average is expected to continue declining.

The agreement between the Government and gasoline suppliers, signed on February 26 with the aim of stabilizing prices, has begun to reflect a decrease in fuel costs. Although President Claudia Sheinbaum officially announced this agreement at Palacio Nacional, some states such as Quintana Roo, Nuevo León, Baja California Sur, Zacatecas, Nayarit, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, San Luis Potosí, Durango, Campeche, and Colima have still not managed to lower the price per liter below 24 pesos.

On the other hand, it is already observed that in Yucatán, Chiapas, Sinaloa, Coahuila, Mexico City, Morelos, Veracruz, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Querétaro, Tabasco, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Tamaulipas, the average cost per liter of gasoline is below 24 pesos. Javier Díaz Morales, commercial director of GasGas Analytics, highlighted that while the trend is downward across the country, disparities still exist between states regarding fuel prices. For example, in Tabasco, more than 90% of gas stations offer the liter for less than 24 pesos, unlike Quintana Roo where 93% exceed that price.
