Sheinbaum Discusses Trade Negotiations with US

The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, provided an explanation about the state of negotiations with the United States to avoid tariffs on steel and aluminum. Subsequently, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, held a press conference from the National Palace on Friday, March 14.

Sheinbaum expressed her wish for the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC) to remain strong with the arrival of Mark Carney as Canadian Prime Minister. She emphasized the importance of the treaty for the three countries and the need for its continuity for mutual benefit.

On the other hand, the President rejected the suggestion from the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, to consider the use of military force against drug cartels on Mexican territory. Sheinbaum stressed the importance of respectful and sovereign collaboration between both countries in the fight against organized crime.

Regarding the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on steel and aluminum, Sheinbaum pointed out that the restraint by the Mexican Government does not mean that the country's sovereignty is not defended. She announced the pursuit of consultations with Washington regarding these measures considered unfair.

Additionally, the Secretary of Culture detailed the Original 2025 program, aimed at combating plagiarism, cultural appropriation, and defending the collective rights of artisans from Mexico's indigenous communities. The first event of the program, Useful Art, is scheduled to take place in Mexico City from June 12 to 15.
