In Mexico, if the economic situation worsens, the number of people in poverty, extreme poverty, unemployment, and emigration will increase. Many of the latter are detained and returned from the United States. Those who decide to cross the border illegally have to leave their families behind, thus breaking social and family integration.
According to Mexico's macroeconomic figures, the majority of the country's inhabitants are regressing in their socioeconomic level: moving from the middle class to poverty, and from poverty to extreme poverty. Despite reports of a decrease in poverty levels, the reality is that most who have stopped being considered poor are now in the category of extreme poverty.
According to data from Coneval, the state agency responsible for measuring poverty in Mexico, the number of people in extreme poverty has increased from 8.7 million in 2018 to 9.1 million. In the first four years of Morena's government, there was no observed increase in the number of wealthy individuals, excluding the rulers and their close circles; instead, 400,000 individuals became classified as extremely poor.
Emigration to the United States has increased, reflecting the growing difficulty of finding jobs in Mexico that provide a salary sufficient to support a family. Although official unemployment figures appear stable with an increase in the number of jobs, the quality of these jobs does not positively reflect in salaries.
Economic indicators show a discouraging outlook: public debt has significantly increased from 8.8 trillion in 2018 to 17.4 trillion in 2024, and inflation has not substantially decreased. Moreover, the per capita Gross Domestic Product has increased, but when accounting for accumulated inflation, it becomes evident that it has actually decreased.
Regarding security, the number of murders during Morena's government has exceeded the figures of past administrations, reaching 202,000 cases. This contrasts with the official narrative attempting to show improvements in various aspects.
In summary, beyond political stances, the reality based on objective figures indicates that the quality of life for the majority of Mexicans has decreased during the Morena administrations. Despite this, it is of general interest that the current Morena government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, does well for the benefit of all citizens of the country.
