The President of the United States, Donald Trump, and the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed this Thursday through a phone call their interest in addressing trade and bilateral cooperation issues, in response to the recent tariff measures imposed by the U.S. administration. Trump highlighted on Truth Social: 'I had a very productive call with the President of Mexico yesterday. Today Italy!' Meanwhile, Sheinbaum mentioned on X: 'Yesterday we had a call with President Trump. Likewise, I met with the highest-level Japanese trade representatives. It was a very productive meeting. We will continue to dialogue to reach good agreements that benefit our countries and our peoples.'
In recent weeks, Mexican representatives have intensified negotiations with their U.S. counterparts to exclude Mexico from the new tariffs and ensure compliance with the rules of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (USMCA). Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard led meetings in Washington presenting arguments and data on Mexican cooperation in migration and combating fentanyl trafficking, aspects that the Trump administration linked to trade policy.
The recent agreement between both governments establishes that, until April 2, Mexico will not be subject to the new tariffs for products covered by the USMCA, while negotiations continue. This extension aims to facilitate dialogue and the search for solutions to avoid greater disruptions to bilateral trade, which represents one of the most significant trade relationships for both countries.
