The Importance of Health Insurance in Mexico

In Mexico, less than 30% of households are financially prepared for emergencies. Health insurance reduces costs for critical medical procedures, making it essential for financial stability.

The Importance of Health Insurance in Mexico

Having major medical expense insurance is essential, especially in high-complexity procedures like spinal surgery, which can cost up to 1.4 million pesos. In such cases, having adequate coverage can reduce the total out-of-pocket expenses for the insured to just over 100,000 pesos including premium, deductible, and coinsurance. This not only means economic protection but also access to quality services, prompt attention, and peace of mind in making medical decisions backed by professionals.

In Mexico, the lack of medical insurance can lead to critical situations where making decisions under pressure with limited resources is the only option. For example, a delivery in a private hospital can cost between 70,000 and 100,000 pesos. During the first half of 2024, the average cost of private medical care exceeded 100,000 pesos. HDI Seguros aims to broaden access to financial products tailored to the needs of Mexicans, providing clear, accessible, and effective solutions at every stage of life.

In contrast to this need, a maternity insurance policy can annually cost between 35,000 and 45,000 pesos, covering specialized care, hospitalization, and follow-up. However, in Mexico, the penetration of insurance in the country was only 3.2% of GDP in 2023, well below the average of 9.3% of OECD countries. This low culture of prevention presents an opportunity to strengthen access and awareness of the benefits of being insured.

This lack of protection is reflected in data showing that more than 70% of Mexican households do not have sufficient savings for emergencies, and only 36% of drivers have an active policy. The vulnerability of families is evident in the use of savings intended for other purposes and in the loss of long-term opportunities. Building a culture of prevention is crucial to provide support, specialized advice, and a network of services that enable individuals to manage risk proactively.

Finally, having broad insurance coverage, whether in health or automotive, can range from 15,000 to 25,000 pesos annually. This moderate investment can prevent significant financial impact in case of unexpected situations. In an environment marked by economic uncertainty and constant risks, being insured becomes more of a strategic necessity than a luxury.
