Employment Growth in Mexico Amid Challenges

In 2025 in Mexico, 179,289 jobs have been created, of which 86.2% correspond to permanent jobs. In the last 12 months, there has been an increase of 43,466 jobs, representing an annual growth rate of 0.2%. The sectors that generated the most employment were trade with 2.3%, the electric industry with 2.1%, and social and communal services with 1.6%.

During the month of April, the states of State of Mexico, Colima, Hidalgo, and Nuevo León stand out, where more jobs have been created with annual increases exceeding 2.5%. A broad national presence is expected throughout the month as part of the strategy leading up to a national event that will be held in June.

Marath Bolaños, head of Labor, mentioned that there are currently more than 22 million formal jobs in Mexico with an average salary of $18,837 pesos. In 2025, 226,731 jobs have been created, and 400 job fairs are planned as part of the Mexico Plan. The next National Employment Fairs will be in August, commemorating International Youth Day, and in October, dedicated to women and people with disabilities.

The employment data in April reflects a contraction of 47,442 formal jobs in Mexico, being the worst figure in April in the last ten years, attributed to the effect of the Holy Week holidays. The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported the loss of jobs in April and highlighted that the decline was due to the mentioned holiday effect.

According to Gabriela Siller, director of economic analysis at Banco Base, this result is concerning as it is the first contraction of employment in April since 2020. Additionally, at the end of April, there was an annual decrease of 2.5% in the number of employers registered with the IMSS. On the other hand, it is noted that 267,473 people are insured in the IMSS modality 40.

Regarding the government strategy, three National Employment Fairs are planned, with the first one on June 9. The calendar includes fairs in different states such as Sonora, Chiapas, Tabasco, Nuevo León, Baja California, State of Mexico, Puebla, Guanajuato, Morelos, Coahuila, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, and Colima, among others.
