
A recent report indicated that Mexico stands out in the illegal trade of counterfeit products worldwide. It ranks seventh in textile counterfeiting, fourteenth in footwear, twenty-third in cosmetic products, and twelfth in electronics.
Globally, it was found that 43% of seizures correspond to clothing and footwear, followed by leather goods, electronics, and cosmetics. Mexico is ranked 17 among the most frequent destinations for these products in global trade, led by the United States, Germany, and Belgium.
In Mexico, the most seized counterfeit products are clothing, footwear, and cosmetics. By product type, counterfeit watches (23%) and footwear (15%) lead international confiscations. The country ranks ninth worldwide as a source of counterfeit products, according to the OECD report "Global Trade Map for Counterfeit Products 2025."
The illegal trade in pirated goods reached $467 million, with significant impacts on consumer safety and intellectual property protection. China tops the list with 45% of the total global seizures of counterfeit products, followed by Turkey, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, and Mexico in ninth place.
The OECD detailed that China and Hong Kong combined represent 74% of the value of counterfeit goods confiscated during the period 2020-2021.
