Mexico to Reallocate Budget to Key Sectors

Mexico's Chamber of Deputies plans to reallocate 18 billion pesos to education, culture, agriculture, and infrastructure, following the approval of the Income Law. This move will reduce funding for judicial and electoral bodies.

Mexico to Reallocate Budget to Key Sectors

The coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal Ávila, announced that a reallocation of around 18 billion pesos from the Federal Expenditure Budget is expected towards strategic sectors such as education, culture, agriculture, and road infrastructure. In media statements, the legislator explained that these adjustments will be made after the Income Law is approved by the Senate—which happened yesterday—and that they will imply reductions in other areas. “If the Income Law is confirmed, the Judiciary, with all its institutions, the Electoral Tribunal, and the INE will suffer a reduction from the original project. The Chamber of Deputies has no increase, just like the Senate of the Republic.” The National Electoral Institute (INE) requested a budget of over 22 billion pesos for 2026, while the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) asked for an additional 260 million pesos compared to its 2025 budget, which was 3,749 million pesos. Meanwhile, the Budget provides the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) with 5,869 million pesos, higher than the 5,208 million pesos of 2025. Monreal assured that the recent road blockades by producers in the Bajío region are due to legitimate demands and that the Budget must address the needs of the countryside: “The problem of agriculture and food production must be addressed, it should not be overlooked.” He added that the Budget and Public Accounts Commission of the Chamber of Deputies will be in charge of analyzing the project and that there is coordination with the Executive branch to process a budget “according to the country's needs.” “It does not diminish us that there are currently talks with the Executive branch for the Budget and the reallocation of resources according to needs.” Yesterday, the Chamber of Deputies approved an agreement from the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) by economic vote, which establishes the rules for the discussion and voting of the draft Federal Expenditure Budget for 2026. The president of the Board of Directors, Kenia López Rabadán, called the deputies to the next session, which will take place on Tuesday, November 4th at 11:00, in person.
