Historic Minimum Wage Increase in Mexico

The Mexican government announced a historic 154% increase in the minimum wage over 7 years. From 2026, workers will be able to buy 20% more goods, and 8.5 million people will benefit. A transition to a 40-hour work week is also proposed.

The federal legislator from Morena highlighted that since the 4T government arrived in 2018 with our former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and now with our President Claudia Sheinbaum, the increase in the minimum wage and for professionals has reached a historic increase of 154 percent in 7 years of government, which had never happened before. With this effort from our Government, reiterated Haces Barba, workers will be able to go from buying 1.8 Basic Baskets in 2025 to being able to acquire 2 Basic Baskets starting in 2026. This is reflected in the fact that 8.5 million workers will benefit in 2026, and thanks to the increase in the minimum wage and for professionals, at least 6.6 million Mexicans have emerged from poverty. It should be recalled that the Minimum Wage and for Professionals this year was 419.88 pesos. Likewise, the leader of the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) also said that the salary increase for the Northern Border Free Zone (ZLFN) will be 315.04 percent, which represents an increase of 5 percent compared to last year where the salary was 278. The deputy and coordinator of Political Operation of the Morena Parliamentary Group in the Chamber of Deputies, Pedro Haces Barba, stated that today two historical events were announced in labor matters because it represents justice for Mexican workers as pointed out at the time by then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and that it has to do with the increase in the minimum wage and the 40-hour work week. At a press conference, the leader of the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) said that with this initiative, the working base will benefit, which will bring social benefits according to the ILO, such as: the reduction of fatigue and work accidents, the improvement in terms of safety and health at work, and that the worker spends more time with the family. The proposal of our President Claudia Sheinbaum in coordination with the business sector, unions, and the Federal Government, more than 40 work tables were held and more than two thousand opinions from citizens were heard where our legislators also participated, which is reflected in this legislative proposal that will maintain the strengthening of their labor rights. The federal deputy for Morena added that the Reform Project to implement the 40-hour work week, which will be discussed by the Congress of the Union in 2026, and that will first go to the Senate and then to San Lázaro where the legislators will participate actively guaranteeing that there will be no salary reduction or affectation to the economic benefits of the workers. "I am sure that it will be passed unanimously, and this is a general benefit for all Mexicans," he stated. Haces Barba highlighted that the reduction will be gradual, in 2026 it will come into force in May; and the transition period will be with 2 less hours per year until reaching 40 hours in 2030. Likewise, the General Secretary of CATEM explained that in the reform proposal it is proposed that a worker have 9 to 12 voluntary overtime hours per week, and it also stipulates a maximum cap of 4 triple hours. Finally, other relevant aspects are that the mandatory electronic registration of the workday is incorporated, and above all, overtime for minors is prohibited.
