Mexico Considers Tariff Hikes to Protect National Industry

The coordinator of the Morena party, Ricardo Monreal, announced that this week, between Tuesday and Wednesday, the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico will discuss and, if necessary, approve a bill to amend the Import and Export Law. The government proposes to increase tariffs from 1,463 tariff lines to 50% on products from countries with which Mexico has no trade agreements. This measure is intended to strengthen the national industry, reduce dependence on imports, and protect strategic sectors. It is expected to affect $52 billion in imports and help preserve 325,000 jobs. However, the bill has sparked controversy, as the business community fears rising prices and shortages, particularly in sectors dependent on Asian components. Monreal stated that discussions with the industry are ongoing to include additional tariffs necessary for the country's development.
