Mexico Considers Chinese Company for Maya Train Project

The Mexican government is considering a Chinese company for supervision of a railway section. This move has caused concern within the Ministry of Defense. The selection of the contractor will be notable against the backdrop of a recent accident on the interoceanic railway, the preliminary report on which is expected to be released next week. The Chinese firm could also create tensions amid the trade war initiated by Donald Trump. In addition to the Chinese company, other Mexican enterprises are participating in the tender. The result is expected to be announced in the first half of February, with the contract set to cover the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years. This is not the first time: in 2021, the Chinese company was also a frontrunner in a tender for the sale of rolling stock, but withdrew under growing pressure from the United States. In the coming weeks, the Ministry of Defense will determine the company in charge of maintaining the catenary on sections 3-B and 4 of the Maya Train.
