Apple has officially launched its Tap to Pay technology in Mexico, a tool that allows merchants and entrepreneurs to accept contactless payments directly from an iPhone. This feature eliminates the need for external hardware, such as traditional point-of-sale terminals connected via Bluetooth or cable, simplifying the payment process for thousands of businesses in the country.
How does the contactless technology work? The system uses the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip built into the device. To process a payment, the seller only needs a compatible payment application installed on their phone. After entering the amount, the customer brings their credit or debit card, their own iPhone, or an Apple Watch to the top of the merchant's device. The data exchange occurs in a secure, encrypted manner in a matter of seconds.
Security represents a fundamental pillar in this deployment. Apple ensures that transactions are processed through the device's Secure Element, which guarantees that card information is never saved on the seller's phone or shared with the company's external servers.
Availability and compatible models Tap to Pay on iPhone came into effect this Tuesday, March 24, in Mexican territory. To use this feature, businesses must have an iPhone XS or a later model running the latest version of iOS. For now, service activation depends on integration with local and global payment platforms. Among the first strategic partners enabling this option are Adyen, Billpocket, Ebanx, Clip, Nuvei, and Revolut, while other banks are expected to join gradually.
Impact on national commerce The arrival of this tool in Mexico aims to reduce the digital gap in the commercial sector, especially for small businesses and independent service providers who require mobility. By transforming a daily-use device into a financial tool, it facilitates the adoption of digital payments in a market where cash still predominates in various sectors.
