Mexican Monte de Piedad Offers Salary Increase to End Six-Month Strike

Monte de Piedad presented a new proposal to end the strike — which has lasted six months — by proposing a 5.3% salary and benefits increase for its workers, as well as the continuity of the major medical insurance, which more than 2,000 workers are beneficiaries of. «No benefit is at stake, nor top-level private medical service or chemotherapy», assured Aldo Achar, General Director of Monte de Piedad. In a press conference, the institution's authorities proposed to partially reinstate the vacant position assignment process, known as 'boletinación', to redefine staffing in branches without layoffs and gradually over a 20-month period. They also agreed on salaries for three newly created positions: Operational Assistant, Commercial Manager, and Operational Manager. What does Monte de Piedad offer to end the strike? The institution's most recent proposal includes several points to try to unblock the strike. Among them stands out a direct 5.3% increase in salary, in addition to a bonus for ending the strike equivalent to 52% of the tabular salary. Likewise, the institution proposed to partially reinstate the vacant position assignment process, known as 'boletinación', to redefine staffing in branches without layoffs and gradually over 20 months, as well as to agree on salaries for three newly created positions. On the other hand, the strike not only affects Monte de Piedad's operations but also thousands of customers who depend on a pawn loan as a way to get liquidity in difficult times. For this reason, the institution reiterated that its objective is to resume operations and continue fulfilling its mandate to support those who use this service. «If the Tribunal ratifies the federal judge's ruling, we would return to work immediately, if the ruling is revoked, the strike continues», concluded Achar.
