Mexico is considering the resumption of shale gas extraction, despite past restrictions. The government previously expressed skepticism about this technology, particularly regarding hydraulic fracturing with water. However, with a new president in office, the topic is back on the agenda. The Mexican Association of Retirement Fund Administrators (Afores) clarified that their investments in infrastructure projects, including gas extraction, are made in strict compliance with current regulations and under supervision. They will only invest in profitable, well-structured projects that pass all technical and risk filters. Key regions for potential extraction are Tamaulipas and Coahuila, specifically the Tampico-Misantla and Sabinas-Burgos basins. These areas are adjacent to the Eagle Ford and Permian Basin fields in Texas. Government initiatives are also aimed at supporting gas station owners, seeking to reduce card payment fees to help them cope with rising fuel costs.
