Mexico Redesigns Energy Sector for Public Benefit

Secretary of Energy Luz Elena González Escobar stated that the Government of Mexico has redesigned the institutional framework of the energy sector with the aim of recovering control over resources for the benefit of the population. While delivering a keynote address at the opening of the Energy and Innovation Fair for Transformation and Well-being, she highlighted that this model prioritizes the reliability of the electric system, fuel supply, the promotion of clean energies, and technological development as axes of energy sovereignty. She noted that the current energy policy seeks to guarantee 'energy for all' with long-term strategic planning in which private investment participates as an ally, under the leadership of the State. González Escobar emphasized that the project driven by President Claudia Sheinbaum is based on the public interest and the construction of a State with the capacity to plan, coordinate, and promote the development of the sector. During the event, held at the National Museum of Energy and Technology (MUNET), she highlighted that institutional strengthening allows facing complex challenges through innovation, scientific research, and collaboration with the social and private sectors. Likewise, she explained that binding planning establishes clear goals for all actors in the energy sector, guiding investment, regulation, and supervision, with the objective of improving electricity generation, resource exploration, and the reduction of polluting emissions. Energy Self-Sufficiency In the same vein, the Secretary of the Environment, Alicia Bárcena, highlighted the importance of advancing towards energy self-sufficiency with environmental responsibility, stating that the country must grow and industrialize without compromising the planet's sustainability. In turn, the Undersecretary of Planning and Energy Transition, Jorge Marcial Islas Samperio, indicated that concepts such as energy justice and short, medium, and long-term planning are fundamental to guaranteeing access to energy, especially in vulnerable communities. The Fair brings together authorities, academics, businesspeople, and students, who present technological innovations and projects aimed at strengthening the national energy sector.
