Mexican Senator Advises Sheinbaum Against Barcelona Summit

Senator and PRI leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, 'Alito', recommended that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum not attend the summit in Barcelona, as it could harm relations with the US government. In an interview with the media, the PRI senator believes that official photos from the meeting could send an incorrect and disastrous message for Mexico. 'Therefore, it is regrettable, I would advise her not to attend that meeting, but to first think about the benefit and national interests of Mexicans, about the strength of the trade agreement, about generating certainty and stability,' said Moreno. The PRI leader affirms that it is not an ideological issue, but a moment that requires capacity and a cool head, as Mexico and the United States are in the midst of negotiations for the USMCA trade agreement. 'One cannot try to send a political message at a mini-summit that will do nothing to help Mexico,' he concluded. Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, is traveling to Barcelona, Spain, to participate in the summit of progressive governments, which will also be attended by the leaders of Colombia, Gustavo Petro; Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi; and Spain, Pedro Sánchez. This will be the first visit of a Mexican president to Spain in the last eight years, since Andrés Manuel López Obrador strained the relationship by demanding an apology from the Iberian nation for the events of the Conquest in the 16th century. Moreno also questioned, 'What decisions will be made at that meeting?'
