Mexico Suspends Magnicharters Operations Due to Financial Issues

The government of Claudia Sheinbaum identified financial problems at the airline Magnicharters since January 2026... but nevertheless allowed the company to continue operating without any restrictions. The Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) conducted an administrative and technical verification (VTA) of Magnicharters in January, in accordance with Article 84 of the Civil Aviation Law. “In this verification, it was clarified that they met all operational safety measures to continue flying. Likewise, the company will be given a deadline to present a plan that addresses the findings detected and guarantees compliance with the necessary conditions to operate safely,” added AFAC. In this way, Magnicharters, whose workers went on strike, will not be able to fly until it addresses the financial obligations identified by the authorities three months ago. Even, if it fails to prove the required solvency, a definitive revocation of the concession title and the AOC will be initiated, which would imply the permanent cessation of its commercial operations. What happened to the Magnicharters passengers who were 'stranded'? Iván Escalante, head of the Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco), detailed that in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), several Magnicharters customers were placed on flights from other airlines. “The secretary, Jesús Esteva, informed me that they had reached an agreement with the other airlines so that they could accommodate passengers in the empty spaces on their returning flights, as this happened right after the holidays,” emphasized President Claudia Sheinbaum at her Monday morning press conference on April 13. The head of Profeco criticized that there was no one at Magnicharters' airport counters to provide information to its customers and that “there is a phone number they published in a bulletin and they don't answer.” Magnicharters is a Mexican airline founded over 42 years ago by Augusto Bojórquez and Luis Bojórquez Maza and operates as Grupo Aéreo Monterrey. The airline's fleet consists of 12 Boeing 737 aircraft. Magnicharters focuses on travel to beach destinations, as its routes from Mexico City cover flights to Mérida, Costa Mujeres, Cancún, Huatulco, and Puerto Escondido. Nevertheless, it was requested to resolve the observations in financial matters and to accredit the solutions for them,” the aviation authority stated in an informational card. Following the suspension of operations announced by Magnicharters on April 11, the aviation authority determined the temporary suspension of the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) of the company. “Additionally, due to the lack of financial capacity identified, it was detected that this could represent a risk to operational safety.”
