Telmex receives extension for telecommunications concession

The Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) has extended the commercial use concession granted to Teléfonos de México (Telmex), which provides services in marginalized areas in Mexico. This concession aims to serve localities with low incomes, deficits in telephone services, and high marginalization, far from urban centers.

The concession, granted by the Secretariat of Communications and Transport in 2005 for a period of 10 years, covers wireless basic telephone access services, data transmission, and internet both in residential and public areas.

Telmex won the bidding to provide services in 134 Local Service Areas for social coverage purposes in telecommunications, receiving a non-recoverable contribution from the Secretariat. The Institute renewed the concession in 2016 and 2019, extending its validity until 2025, subject to new conditions that Telmex must accept.

In its analysis for the extension of the concession, the IFT emphasized that the compliance with the measures imposed on Telmex as the Preponderant Economic Agent in the telecommunications sector was not reviewed. The company will be able to continue offering the services established in its current concession in the designated areas.
