Santiago Nieto Takes Charge of IMPI and Challenges Ahead

Santiago Nieto, recognized for his track record in public administration, could achieve significant advances at the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). Since 2020, IMPI has acquired new powers to protect intellectual property rights, and it is expected that by November 2021 it will be properly equipped to fulfill its new functions.

In recent years, a decline has been observed in the number of administrative declaration requests at IMPI, as well as in inspections conducted and the value of seized goods. This situation has been attributed to the lack of clarity in the criteria used to resolve relevant matters.

Santiago Nieto has shown receptiveness to dialogue with productive sectors and IMPI users, using various means of communication and participating in meetings with associations specialized in intellectual property. His work, in collaboration with other entities, will be crucial to strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights and combating product counterfeiting.

Despite the challenges faced by IMPI, Santiago Nieto's arrival has been well received by industrialists. It is expected that, under his leadership, current obstacles can be overcome and user confidence restored. In addition, Nieto has emphasized the fight against piracy, a topic that has gained relevance in recent times and is crucial in light of future reviews, such as the T-MEC in 2026.

As Santiago Nieto assumes his position at IMPI, structural changes and greater transparency in resolution processes are anticipated, which could significantly contribute to improving the effectiveness and reputation of this institution in Mexico.
