The first half of October in Mexico registered an increase in the inflation rate, which accelerated to 4.69 percent annually, according to data from Inegi. This increase was driven by the non-core component, which rose by 7.17 percent during this period, interrupting a streak of five fortnights with moderate data.

Among the products that experienced a significant price increase are several basic foods. Tomatoes rose by 4.02 percent, zucchini increased by 15.56 percent, and papaya, a staple in Mexican breakfasts, saw its price increase by 15.51 percent during the first half of October. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the most consumed variety of papaya in Mexico is the maradol.

Regarding the price of papaya, a considerable increase was observed between October 1 and 16 in various regions of the country. For example, the kilogram of maradol papaya sold in Aguascalientes went from 17 to 34-49 pesos during that period. The price variation was also reflected in other markets, such as in Tijuana, where it was sold at 15 pesos on the same date.

According to the National System of Market Information and Integration (SNIIM), the price of papaya fluctuated in different states. In the San Nicolás de los Garza Wholesale Market (Nuevo León), the price per kilogram reached 37 pesos at the beginning of October due to product scarcity. In Durango, prices ranged from 26 to 30 pesos per kilogram on the same date.

In Jalisco, the price of papaya in the first half of October varied between 19 and 38 pesos per kilogram in the Guadalajara Wholesale Market. Meanwhile, at the Ecatepec Central Wholesale Market (State of Mexico), the price remained in a range of 20 to 40 pesos per kilogram during the same period. The volatility in papaya prices reflects fluctuations in the national market during October.
