The Mexican ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma, stated that the review of the USMCA in 2026 will focus on environmental issues, but it will not involve a renegotiation of the trilateral agreement, rather a reexamination. Moctezuma highlighted that the treaty has brought prosperity to the three countries and benefited the population by offering lower prices and a greater variety of products.

In an interview following his participation in a Milken Institute forum, Moctezuma emphasized that for the United States, the USMCA is crucial, as Mexico represents 16% of all its exports and the economies of both countries are integrated.

Regarding the threats that the United States could block Mexican auto exports during the presidential campaign, Moctezuma mentioned that these statements do not always convert into public policies and that we should wait for the new government to take office to define its actions.

Concerning the review of the USMCA, it is expected that the discussion will mainly focus on environmental issues, a priority of President Sheinbaum, to ensure sustainable growth and a friendly relationship with the environment.

On judicial reform, Moctezuma dismissed the concern that it could deter investors, highlighting that Mexico remains an attractive country for investment and that North America is considered a region where a significant portion of investment currently in Asian countries should return. In this regard, Moctezuma underlined the importance of offering administrative facilities, legal security, combating insecurity, infrastructure, and energy as fundamental aspects on which the government should focus to attract more investment.
