Concerns Over Tortilla Price Decrease in Mexico

The President of the National Tortilla Council warns that a proposed 10% price cut could lead to the bankruptcy of 80% of tortilla businesses in Mexico. The government's plan lacks consultation with industry stakeholders, raising concerns about its feasibility and potential economic impact.

Concerns Over Tortilla Price Decrease in Mexico

The president of the National Tortilla Council, Homero López García, criticized the lack of dialogue with the Secretary of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, regarding the reduction of the price of tortillas. Recapping, López García mentioned that the premature announcement to lower the price generated uncertainty in the sector, as it was not discussed with representatives of the tortilla shops. He emphasized the importance of making decisions responsibly and after prior consultation with those involved.

The CNT leader expressed the sector's willingness to collaborate with the programs of President Claudia Sheinbaum, as long as the proper processes are followed. He pointed out that the solution does not lie in lowering the price of tortillas but in organizing meetings with all actors in the production chain to find measures to reduce costs without harming businesses or consumers.

From statistical data, it is mentioned that there are around 110,000 tortilla shops in Mexico, generating more than 283,000 direct jobs in the sector. The average daily consumption of tortillas per person is 9 pieces, totaling a national production of approximately 32 million 400 thousand kilos of tortillas.

Homero López García warned that reducing the cost of tortillas by 10% as proposed by the federal government could jeopardize the economic viability of 80% of the tortilla shops in the country, which would represent millions in losses and the need for government subsidies. The leader denied that meetings had been held with the sector prior to the announcement of the price reduction and expressed the lack of communication with the Secretary of Agriculture regarding this matter.
