During the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the creation of formal businesses in the manufacturing industry at the national level slowed down compared to the period of Enrique Peña Nieto. However, in Nuevo León, the situation was opposite, as it was the state with the highest number of new companies in this sector.
According to an analysis by Coparmex Nuevo León based on data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), last September there were 135,585 manufacturing companies registered in the country, representing an increase of 3,561 companies compared to December 2018. In contrast, Nuevo León recorded 11,341 formal companies in the manufacturing industry, 1,026 more than at the end of 2018.
Cecilia Carrillo López, director of Coparmex Nuevo León, highlighted the competitive position of the state regarding attracting new manufacturing companies at the national level. However, she also warned about security problems that could affect this trend, mentioning examples from other states like Tamaulipas and Guanajuato, where insecurity has led to the closure of manufacturing companies.
During Enrique Peña Nieto's term, a total of 14,427 new manufacturing companies opened nationwide, of which 937 were in Nuevo León. In contrast, during AMLO's administration, several states ended with a negative balance regarding the number of companies in the manufacturing sector, with some of the most affected being Mexico City, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Morelos, and Campeche.
In addition to Nuevo León, Querétaro was another state that significantly increased the number of manufacturing companies compared to the Peña Nieto administration. The manufacturing industry is considered one of the productive activities with the highest added value for the country's economy, as well as being the sector that pays the highest salaries. Thanks to its export activity, Mexico's GDP has managed to maintain positive growth rates.
